Belarusian Visa and Entry Requirements

In order to enter Belarus you will need the following documents:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months past your scheduled date of departure
  • Tickets for return or onward travel
  • A valid Belarusian Visa

A Belarusian visa may be obtained for approximately $60 US (1 week processing time -- $140 for 48 hour processing) through the Belarusian embassy or consulates (if any) in your home country. This process can be frustratingly complex, however, and may involve several phone calls, faxing of documents multiple times, or even travel to the embassy itself to handle the request in person -- all of which adds to the cost (and the time). There are companies which will handle this process for you, for an additional charge of $30 to $50.

Or, if all of your paperwork is in order, you can obtain a Belarusian visa at the airport in Minsk for $140 US ($60 US if there is no Belarusian embassy or consulate in your home country). This may be the cheapest way to go in the long run.

In order to obtain a Belarusian visa, you will need the following documents:

  • Valid passport
  • Additional passport-size photo
  • Confirmation of Visa Entitlement
  • Application form, completed and signed (available at airport)

The Confirmation of Visa Entitlement may take different forms, depending on your mode of travel. Basically, you need documentary proof that you will not be wandering about the country destitute with no place to stay.

  • If you will be the guest of a private Belarusian citizen, you will neeed a Visa entitlement certificate (IZVESHENIYE) from the local OVIR in Belarus. Your host must obtain this certificate for you and send the original certificate to you. (This is a time-consuming process for your host -- allow 4-6 weeks for approval.) Your host will need to know:

    • Your Full Name
    • Your Home Address
    • Your Official Nationality
    • Your Passport Number and Date of Birth
    • Your Date of Arrival in and Departure from Belarus
  • If you will be the guest of a business based in Belarus, you will need an official invitation from an organization authorized to invite business visitors to Belarus. Your sponsor will arrange the invitation, and will normally send it to you by fax. Your sponsor will need to know:

    • Your Full Name
    • Your Official Nationality
    • Your Passport Number and Date of Birth
    • The Cities you will Visit during your stay in Belarus
    • Your Date of Arrival in and Departure from Belarus
  • If you will be travelling as part of a commercial tour group you will need a letter from the tour company confirming your itinerary and including a copy of the confirmation from an authorized Belarus travel company which shows the reference number for the visa.
  • If you will be travelling as an unsponsored individual tourist, you will need confirmation of hotel reservations from an authorized Belarusian travel company (or directly from the hotel) showing a reference number for the visa.

The Confirmation of Visa Entitlement is absolutely essential! If you intend to obtain your visa at the airport, and you arrive without an official invitation from a Belarusian citizen or business or proof of confirmed hotel reservations from an authorized Belarusian travel agency or hotel, precisely as described above, you will not be admitted to the country! This will result in considerable personal embarrassment and inconvenience, as you will be restricted to the International Arrivals and Departures area of the airport terminal until you can arrange to leave the country.

Please note that, although this page is kept as current as possible, changing political conditions may result in changes to visa or entry requirements. If you are contemplating travel to Belarus, please contact the Belarusian embassy or consulate in your home country for the latest requirements -- or contact us, and we will try to determine the specific requirements which apply to you.
